American Red Cross Lifeguard Recertification Course
The American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguard Recertification Course is the course guards need to take to maintain their certification. This course takes lifeguards through an abbreviated course to review material and introduce new course material.
This certification is a nationally recognized course allowing successful participants to lifeguard at pools.
Typical course details: While each course may vary, most of our courses follow the following details.
- Each course is classroom only, there are no blended learning options
- In person training is scheduled for 10 hours
- Courses begin with the pre-course (included within the 10 hours)
General schedule: Most courses are taught in one day for 10 hours. This lets participants renew their certification and get back to work the next day.
- Before lunch – Pre-course skills test, entries, approaches, victim recognition, assisting distressed swimmers, rescuing an active drowning victim, rescuing a passive drowning victim,
- After lunch – Performing a primary assessment and treating breathing emergencies, treating cardiac emergencies, first aid, rescuing a spinal victim, what
to do when things don’t go as practiced, CPR/AED and lifeguard written exams and
practical skills testing - **Please note that is a general outline, sessions will be adapted based on course schedule
To participate and pass the course: Participants must meet a variety of criteria to participate and pass the course successfully.
- Must be able to attend scheduled class time
- ARC lifeguard certification must be current or within 30 days of expiration
- Must be able to successfully pass the precourse skills test
- Pass 1 written exam with 80% or better
- Pass scenario based skills test
